Hello!
My name is Tuulikki. I’m a multi-disciplinary artist based in Helsinki, Finland.
I started my artistic practice by taking photographs with an old Nikkormat I got from my dad in secondary school. I sneaked out of chemistry class to work on my prints in the darkroom. Later I went on to study photography and film in Napier University in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since then I have studied fine arts in Pekka Halonen Academy of Arts and have also taken courses on ceramics, graphic design and silk screen printing. Currently I’m working mostly with painting and analog photography, but I’m also into making silly ceramics and textile art pieces.
Mostly the ideas for my work come to me as spontaneous, instant, emotional images. Sometimes they appear when I’m falling asleep or even in my dreams. There is an urgency to my work. I need to get the image out of my head before I forget it, before I get a chance to criticise it. In my process I try to eliminate the room for questioning and instead aim to keep the original, intuitive feeling alive. This can be seen in my work as a child-like approach which is enhanced by the use of color. Often my work originates from difficult themes like anxiety and loneliness but what I try to portrait instead is hope, and at times, even frantic joy.
